In Fall of 2020 Untold Stories took to the airwaves with a four-part podcast series called “Our Stories Did Not Begin With Pain.”  This podcast explores the following themes:

  • Intergenerational connections. Storytelling in real time from one generation to the next, practicing the spirit of Sankofa by reaching back to learn past lessons to bring the wisdom forward today as we build tomorrow.

  • Emotional freedom space. Creating a space where we have the ability to feel all of our emotions - especially in times like this - the joy, pain, truth, dreams.

  • Space for women of color to be our authentic selves. Let’s be together to learn from and to celebrate what each of us bring. Let’s define for ourselves what it means for us all when we are in our full power and connected!

*Gratitude to Untold Stories member Yodit Mesfin Johnson who first spoke the phrase: “Our stories did not begin with pain.”

Join four Untold Stories of Liberation and Love Sister Poets, Cryss Cambell, Yodit Mesfin Johnson, Erika Murcia,  and Desirae Simmons, as we share stories spanning past and future generations. We start with a powerful sage offering, share intergenerational stories, hum together to find our individual and ancestral frequency, and read and write some poetry!

In this episode featuring Cherisa Allen, Nuola Akinde, Erika Murcia, and Desiraé Simmons, powerful words kept surfacing: Borders, Overflow, Abundance, Play, Fullness, Our Body. We let those words awaken in us poetry, storytelling, conversation, and of course, finding our breath.

The episode featured Irene Inatty, Amber Fellows, Ugbaad Keynan, and Desiraé Simmons, starting with a reading from speculative near future fiction and we explored writing as a healing practice.  We each shared a glimpse into what a future world worth struggling for would be like, and offerings to our ancestors and our descendants which opened the door for intergenerational storytelling that took us deep. We got very honest  about generational trauma, remembering that it is only through healing from the trauma that we can achieve liberation. Yes, it was a full episode!
